Willow Creek Ranch doesn’t believe in re-inventing the wheel. We buy proven stock from the Richardson Ranch on the Queen Charlotte Islands. The Richardson’s have been in the business for several generations. Our foundation sire, Tlell 517 Santana 12K was purchased in 2001. The following year, Tlell 46B Dude 21L was added to the bull pen, followed by Tlell 1H Honda 3M. Our newest acquisition in 2005 is Tlell 29F Red Cedar whose “walking rights” were purchased by Jack & Lin Armstrong. Red Cedar is sired by the “Hall of Fame” bull, CS Boomer 29F. Red Cedar is a sleep-easy sire, a true heifer bull whose semen is highly sought after.

2010 will be another year of change as we go into our second year of pasture calving in April/May. Red Cedar and his son, Little Red will be joined by some new Richardson Ranch yearling bulls.

Willow Creek Ranch has worked hard to stay current with all the recommendations in the beef industry. Willow Creek Ranch is a Registered Verified Beef Producer, has completed an Environmental Farm Plan, a Biodiversity Plan and does Age Verification each year. We are in the process of completing Premises Identification.

Willow Creek Ranch is located in Hixon, between Quesnel and Prince George in Central British Columbia. The ranch is a bit less than 600 acres with both a grazing lease and permit that puts the land base at just over 3500 acres. Set in a valley with three creeks winding through the place, the ranch has the unique look of a wild life park. The cattle graze alongside white-tailed deer, elk and moose as well as with black bears and grizzly bears. The creeks are home to a variety of trout and are the spawning grounds to both sockeye and spring salmon. Willow Creek Ranch does rotational grazing and has continued to make fencing and cross fencing one of our priorities. With the support of Dunkley Lumbar, we now have the perimeter of our crown permit fenced. Although we have over 200 acres in hay, Willow Creek Ranch has made the decision to move to rotational grazing and buy all our hay.

Back in 1921, the original settlers, the Coulter family ran an Ayrshire Dairy. Later on the Larsen and Beam families both ran dairies. In 2000, Deborah and Lloyd and their daughter Alexandra bought the ranch, renamed it Willow Creek Ranch and started a small commercial cow/calf operation. By early 2005, the commercial herd has expanded to over 60 head of Angus/Simmental cows crossed with Registered Polled Hereford bulls. In 2003, the ranch started offering sales of natural beef. At this time, the ranch was involved with several riparian projects aimed at establishing rotational grazing and setting up calving and wintering grounds. In 2004, the ranch expanded to include a small purebred polled Hereford group. 2005 has included some fun assets to the ranch, such as our Pygmy goat family and our small egg sale business. The past 3 years, Willow Creek Ranch has worked on quality rather than quantity in both our herd and our land.

Despite the challenges in the cattle market, we remain committed to the industry and this great lifestyle!
